My place

I moved into my apartment a week ago in a district called Friedrichshain on a lively street.

The neighborhood is a good example of Berlin's love for keeping things broken yet electrified: walking home from my usual S-Bahn train station (which at the hours between 2am-4am is super busy because of people getting off to go the bars/clubs in the area), I cross a bridge, pass a bike parking lot where I get chatted up by the many drug dealers that hang around (don't worry, they are harmless and its part of the charm). I pass by food stands that are good for quick snacks, pass a bank, walk along a stretch of wall that surrounds a lot that has 6 different clubs, say howdy to another group of dealers. When I get near the super ugly squatter building I turn onto my street, which has cobble stone road, nice trees, and lots of restaurants and bars sprawling their tables out on the sidewalk.

I'm about 5min away from the S-Bahn train and U-Bahn subway stations and there is also two tramline stops within 3min and there's a bus stop at my corner. Berlin's transport is awesome because all four of the vehicle types are run by one organization so there is only one ticket system for all the public transportation. For example, I have a one month pass which lets me jump on and off from any of vehicle type fluidly. It also operates on an honor system so there is also no ticket taker or turnstiles for the rides (there are occasionally enforcers that come in to do random checks on a moving ride and fine you if you're caught without a ticket). Berlin is the second largest city in the EU, but all this makes it very convenient to get around.
